Education

 

NAMI Yakima offers a variety of educational opportunities for families, mental health consumers and others interested in mental health issues. All courses are offered free of charge and are made possible by the generous support of agencies like the United Way of Yakima County, Junior League of Yakima, Yakima Valley Memorial Hospital and others.

The NAMI Yakima Family-to-Family Education Program is a free, 12-week course for family members of individuals with mental illnesses. The course is taught by trained family members, and all instruction and course materials are free to class participants.

Topics covered include:

• Current information about schizophrenia, bipolar disorder,
major depression and other illnesses

• Information about medications, side effects, etc.

• Gaining empathy, problem solving,
listening, and communication techniques

• Acquiring strategies for handling crises and relapse

• Care for the caregiver: coping with worry,
stress, and emotional overload

• Guidance on locating supports and community services

• Information on advocacy initiatives

The NAMI Yakima Visions for Tomorrow Education Program is a free, 8-week course for family members, caregivers and others involved with school age children who have mental illnesses. The course is taught by trained family members, caregivers and others, and all instruction and course materials are free to class participants.

In Visions for Tomorrow classes you’ll learn about specific brain
disorders such as:

  • Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD)
  • ODD/Conduct Disorder
  • Borderline Personality Disorder
  • Bipolar/Depressive Disorders
  • Schizophrenia/Schizoaffective
  • Autistic Spectrum Disorders
  • Tourette's Syndrome
  • Anxiety Disorders
  • Reactive Attachment Disorder
  • Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder
  • Eating Disorders

Additionally, you’ll learn more about these essential areas and skills:

NAMI Yakima maintains a wide selection of books, videos, dvds, brochures and other resources. All are welcome and encouraged to visit our offices at 402 South 4th Avenue to check out library materials.
